Lessons A Detroit Business Can Learn From World's Biggest Advertiser

May 12, 2023 12:11:58 PM / by Larry Julius

There are 158,041  small businesses in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI Metro Area, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Almost every one of these businesses is competing for a portion of the $88.4 billion of local retail spending expected to occur in 2023.*

To capture the largest share of this giant pool of consumer cash, Detroit small business owners will need to consider advertising.

"Think you have a great product?" asks the U.S. Small Business Administration. "Unfortunately, no one's going to know about it unless you advertise. Advertising, if done correctly, can do wonders for your sales., and you know what that means: more revenue and more success for your company."

One of the best ways to advertise in Detroit may be on local radio, a fact not lost on the world's largest advertiser, Proctor & Gamble. Last year, P&G upped spending on the radio by 43% to $235 million, according to Vivvix (formerly Kantar Media), led by a big jump in local radio.

Advertising In Detroit: Radio Ratings Exceed TV For First Time

Mar 20, 2023 3:41:21 PM / by Larry Julius

Every week, according to Nielsen, Detroit radio reaches 2,804,826 adults. This is more consumers than use any other medium, including local TV, local cable, streaming video, social media, online audio, and newspapers.

Reach, though, is only one component used to calculate ratings.  The other metric that contributes to the rating formula is the time spent using each medium. So, although for the past 10 years, AM/FM radio's reach has been significantly higher than the reach of local TV, consumers spent considerably more time watching TV. As a result of the math, TV has enjoyed higher ratings than radio.

For the first time, however, AM/FM radio ratings have exceeded local TV ratings by three percent among the key advertising demographic of 18-49-year-olds, according to Nielsen's Total Audience Data for the third quarter of 2023.

In the Detroit area, there are 1,741,591 18-49-year-olds, the majority of whom are millennials, a generation that now accounts for nearly one-third of all retail spending.

Surprise? Detroit Radio Is Still #1 Way To Reach Local Consumers

Nov 30, 2022 2:41:41 PM / by Larry Julius

Detroit area business owners have an abundance of options for marketing their goods and services to local consumers. New research from Nielsen, however, indicates that advertising on Detroit radio is still the best way to reach local shoppers.

Every week, according to Nielsen, Detroit radio reaches 2.8 million adults. This is significantly more than are reached by social media, local TV stations and cable systems, newspapers, streaming video and audio, and podcasts.

In addition to listening to their favorite Detroit radio stations over the air, Nielsen reports that 701,141 adults also listen to local stations online every month.

As a matter of fact, according to a study conducted by Edison Research during the third quarter of 2022, among Adults 25-54, 17% of all time spent listening to local AM/FM stations occurs online. This share of online listening has nearly doubled since 2016.

Holiday Spending In Detroit Will Top $13.0 Billion In 2022

Nov 10, 2022 2:57:10 PM / by Larry Julius

Economic concerns among Southeast Michigan area consumers are not expected to subdue holiday shopping in in 2022.  Based on forecasts from The National Retail Federation, local shoppers are projected to spend at least $13.0 billion this year. This would be 6% more than was spent in 2021.

“While consumers are feeling the pressure of inflation and higher prices, and while there is continued stratification with consumer spending and behavior among households at different income levels, consumers remain resilient and continue to engage in commerce,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “In the face of these challenges, many households will supplement spending with savings and credit to provide a cushion and result in a positive holiday season.”

The biggest challenge facing Detroit business owners is keeping holiday spending local. NRF expects 10-12% of purchases to happen online from retailers like Amazon and Walmart.

To lay claim to this expanding pool of holiday spending,  and keep business local, small business owners will need advertising. By, most marketing metrics, the best way to advertise is on Detroit radio.

Advertising In Detroit: Is Online Marketing Enough?

Oct 20, 2022 10:32:28 AM / by Larry Julius

According to Nielsen, 3.3 million adults in Southeast Michigan have access to the internet. Eighty-five percent of these consumers conduct online research before making a retail purchase, says a report from GE Capital Bank.

To reach Detroit area adults in the market to buy their goods and services, businesses spent $2.6 billion in 2021 on digital adverting, according to projections based on the 2021 IAB Internal Advertising Report.  This is 35% more than was spent during the prior year.

This mammoth pool of online advertising dollars targeted at Detroit consumers is being spent on a variety of digital resources including search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), display ads, video ads, audio ads, email, and social media. Each of these tools can precisely target consumers who are currently in the market to buy whatever it is a business is selling.

Most forms of online advertising are designed to compel Detroit consumers to click on a digital ad that will transport them to the website of a company that sells whatever it is consumers are in the market to buy.  Is investing only in digital advertising enough to drive sales for a local business?

Many marketing experts believe that online advertising needs to be part of a broader marketing strategy to be successful.

Dec 30, 2021 1:57:15 PM / by Larry Julius

To ensure success, every Southeast Michigan business owner needs to advertise.

"Think you have a great product?" asks the US Small Business Administration. "Unfortunately, no one’s going to know about it unless you advertise.”

The SBA goes on to say, “Advertising, if done correctly, can do wonders for your product sales, and you know what that means: more revenue and more success for your business.”

There are dozens of ways for local small business owners to advertise. By most metrics, the best way to advertise is on Detroit radio. These measures of effectiveness, however, are often obscured by the glimmer and glitz of newer technologies.

Detroit Radio Still Reaches More Local Consumers Than All Other Media

Dec 10, 2021 2:35:44 PM / by Larry Julius

When WWJ-AM became Detroit's first radio station in 1921, there was no Facebook, no Xfinity, no Sirius/XM, no Netflix, and no podcasts. It would be 26 years before there was even a local TV station.  Consequently, it was pretty easy for radio to become the number one reach medium among local consumers.

Over the past 100 years, Detroit business owners have come to depend on the mammoth reach of radio among local shoppers to successfully market the goods and services they sell. Advertising on Detroit radio has helped Southeast Michigan companies to survive and thrive during world wars, natural disasters, recessions, depressions, and even a pandemic.

Heading into 2022, local consumers have more media choices than ever before. But, despite the overabundance of social media, video streaming, audio streaming, cable, and other technological marvels, Detroit radio is still the most used advertising medium.

Detroit New Car Buyers Agree: Put AM/FM Radio In My Dashboard

Nov 11, 2021 10:23:00 AM / by Larry Julius

In 2020, there were 251,685 new cars and trucks registered in the Detroit metro area. This number is based on projections from the National Auto Dealers Associaton (NADA) and the U.S. Census bureau.

In all, says NADA, there are 614 new-car dealerships in Michigan. Despite the pandemic, these dealers, including those in the Detroit area, sold $38.2 billion worth of new vehicles.

Through June of this year, these same dealers have already rung up $20.5 billion in new car sales.

When it comes to buying new vehicles, Detroit consumers have a broad range of preferences. Some buyers want Fords while others want Chevrolets, Toyotas, or Teslas.  Some buyers want pick-up trucks, while others want sub-compacts, SUVs, or sports cars. Of course, some want blue vehicles, while others want pearl white, orchard green, or redolent red.

There is one purchase criterion, however, that most Detroit car buyers can agree on. They want an AM/FM radio smack-dab, in the middle of their dash.

According to Nielsen, 866,403 Southeast Michigan consumers listened to or downloaded a podcast during the past 30 days. This is 24.7% of the adult population.

A podcast is a downloadable digital audio file available to listeners on an internet-connected device like a smartphone, tablet, or computer. These files are typically part of series focusing on a particular theme such as true crime, professional football, politics, or pop culture.

Detroit consumers can listen to their favorite podcasts whenever they choose using apps like Spotify, Pandora, Google, and Stitcher. The most used podcasting app, though, is Apple Podcasts.

Research from PodcastHosing.org indicates that Detroit consumers can access more than 2,000,000 podcast series comprising over 48,000,000 unique episodes. According to data compiled by Edison research, the top 10 podcasts during the second quarter of 2021 were:
